Nowadays it’s not hard to start a blog
You don’t need much technical understanding. Take myself as an example: I have the technical understanding, but I am tired of setting everything up by myself. So I found a provider that made everything for me. I just had to register, choose the package I wanted (most likely the basic package for beginning) and give the domain name VideoGameStocks.ch. Webland.ch made the rest for me: Gave me some space to put my blog and files on, registered my domain and set up my database. And the best bonus about it: It even created the wordpress blog for me with just some clicks! I didn’t have to do any technical rubbish, I didn’t have to upload the wordpress files by myself – nothing. Just click some buttons and start blogging. Internet services rule nowadays.
Alright, so you have your web hoster, your domain and your own blog with a shiny free theme – that’s cool and exciting. But don’t expect an income for a living in the first week!
The main income by blogging is created by advertising machines like Google Adsense or some affiliation programs like Amazon. But to get money, you need two things: People that visit your blog and people that click on your Adsense window. Obviously, the first thing leads to the second, but it’s not easy to get visitors in the first place.
Now think about yourself
What makes you visit a webblog? Or a homepage? Take a gaming homepage like ign.com or gamespot: You visit them because they have some crazy news about all the new games that will come out soon. They have the newest movies, reviews, previews, walkthroughs and Tokyo Game Show visitings. And they have a forum with a huge community where you can talk about every aspect of real and virtual life.
And what have you got? A blog entry with the title “Earn a living with blogging”? That’s not really much compared to the content of ign or gamespot.
Of course ign and gamespot are a much bigger organisation with so many people working in the backgrounds giving you all the content you want in full time work. You probably just do it next to your daily job. But you get the idea: Have something on your blog that people want to read.
And maybe you have content that is not too much static or restricted. You could easily fill your blog with the live of your dog. But unless your dog gets pregnant or bites a postman or gets alienated and overwhelms the whole american army with his twelve laser shooting tails you probably won’t get too many readers on your blog. Except your grandmother. She would like to read it and get happy about it. Grandmothers love alienated dogs.
The philosophy of VideoGameStocks.ch
Stocks in general are very dynamic. They change every second. But I don’t want to bore myself or the visitor. I just want to point out important dates or events and what happen to the related stock, most likely the release of a new game or the general analysis of a stock. I also write about games. But I don’t want to bore myself or the visitor. I just write about games that I absolutely love and that are worth to write about. Or games that are so shitty you would hate it if you bought them. I want to expand the world view of my visitor.
The most important rule to earn income with a blog imo
Did you mention that I wrote nothing about earning money in the last paragraph? Now I tell you my own secret how I think you will get the most money out of your blog.
The most important rule to earn money from your blog is not trying to earn money from your blog
Got it? If you only concentrate your goal of earning money, you will get lost. You will get angry soon and lose the ambition for your blog. Earning money from a blog takes a lot of work and time.
Take my blog again. I am earning absolutely nothing from my blog. But that’s okay for me, this blog is so new how would I have built up a readership in such a short time? That’s impossible. Also I don’t rely on this money to get rich. Maybe you read about my dream of playing Heroes of Newerth the whole day. I don’t want to get there with this blog. I want to get rich with hard work and smart investments.

Let me tell you a story
I always wanted to live healthier. Just drink water. Eat more apples and bananas instead of pizza and burgers. But I always forgot about it soon. I just had more important things to think about. Yesterday I came back from buying my lunch, and I realised I reached my goal without noticing: I was not so hungry, so I bought a salade, a banana and two apples for the afternoon. And I had a bottle of water, as I got used to drink water in the office. There is no way to eat healthier I guess.
This is exactly what I want to show you: Ensure the quality, and the profit comes by itself.
Please be aware of the fact that earning a steady income with a blog may be your dream for now, but it could also be hell on earth once you got there. Read this quote about this topic.
From esvl:
“I thought I could get rich quickly from the internet, so I quit my job only to find out that I had to work harder than when I had a day job. Sometimes working until 4am. Only after 6 months did I start to make enough money to make a living on the internet. And I still have to work hard to maintain it.
If I look back I might choose my dayjob because it was way easier. But the perks of working for yourself just beats that by a mile.”
Many people will always reach for higher goals. Many people will always be unhappy. Maybe it’s easier just to be pleased with what you got instead of always wanting MORE MORE MORE. Think about it.
I plan to write some articles about happiness, as I am also very interested in this theme. I already read some nice books about how you’d be happy with what you have. I often look around and realize the wealth I already have and can be proud of. Money gives you satisfaction. But it’s not the only way to get there. Maybe some pot will do, too.
